GKIDS has announced an expanded partnership with IMAX to bring a series of new 4K restorations of beloved Studio Ghibli films to North American theaters throughout 2026. The theatrical screenings will offer fans an enhanced cinematic experience, building on the recent success of Princess Mononoke‘s 4K IMAX re-release.
Studio Ghibli Classics Reimagined in 4K
The upcoming initiative will see iconic Studio Ghibli titles presented in stunning 4K resolution, meticulously overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui. Okui, who has been instrumental in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since 1993, including serving as Director of Digital Imaging on the Academy Award-winning The Boy and the Heron, is ensuring the highest quality for these restorations. This commitment aims to preserve the original artistic vision while bringing enhanced visual clarity to the beloved animation.
The Success of Princess Mononoke in IMAX
The decision to expand the partnership follows the highly successful 2025 IMAX release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke. The 4K restoration of Princess Mononoke not only garnered critical acclaim but also became the second-highest-grossing vault release ever for IMAX, demonstrating a strong demand for Ghibli films in premium formats. This re-release, which celebrated Studio Ghibli‘s 40th anniversary, was available with both Japanese audio and English subtitles, as well as an English dub, earning over US$6.8 million by May 2025.
An Expanded Partnership for North American Audiences
GKIDS, the North American distributor for the extensive Studio Ghibli film library, and IMAX have been collaborating since 2021 on various titles, including The Boy and the Heron. This new, expanded agreement for 2026 signifies a deeper commitment to showcasing Ghibli’s masterpieces on the grandest scale. Eric Beckman, CEO of GKIDS, expressed enthusiasm for the extended relationship, highlighting GKIDS’ dedication to the shared theatrical experience and emphasizing that IMAX provides an unparalleled way for fans to immerse themselves in Studio Ghibli’s visual splendor and storytelling.
What to Expect in 2026
While specific film titles for the 2026 screenings are yet to be fully revealed, the first film under this new agreement is slated to debut in IMAX early in the year. More details regarding the schedule and featured films are expected to be announced in the coming months. These screenings will undoubtedly be a major event for animation enthusiasts and long-time Studio Ghibli fans across North America, offering a unique opportunity to revisit or discover these animated classics with enhanced picture and sound.
The Legacy of Studio Ghibli on the Big Screen
GKIDS has consistently championed Studio Ghibli’s presence in North American theaters, notably through its annual “Studio Ghibli Fest.” This program has brought selected Ghibli films to over 1,000 theaters nationwide each year since 2017. The partnership with IMAX for these 4K restorations further elevates this tradition, ensuring that the visual richness and profound narratives of Studio Ghibli continue to captivate audiences in the best possible cinematic presentation. The meticulous 4K restoration process, overseen by Studio Ghibli itself, promises an authentic and breathtaking visual journey for moviegoers.
