GKIDS, in collaboration with Shout! Studios, is set to release the digitally remastered and restored Studio Ghibli classic, Grave of the Fireflies, on Blu-ray and DVD on July 8, 2025. The release will include both a standard edition and a limited edition SteelBook. This poignant film, directed by Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka and is renowned for its emotional depth and historical significance.
A Heartbreaking Tale of Survival
Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of two siblings, Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, struggling to survive in Japan during the final months of World War II. After an American air raid kills their mother, the children are left to fend for themselves in a war-torn countryside. They seek refuge with relatives, but increasing tensions force them to leave and find shelter in an abandoned bomb shelter. As food becomes scarce, Seita and Setsuko’s resilience is tested as they cling to fleeting moments of happiness amidst their harsh reality.
