The manga adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, penned by Hiroyuki Tamakoshi, has resumed its serialization with a planned three-chapter return. The latest chapter was featured in the August issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Gundam Ace magazine, released on June 26.
This intermittent serialization follows a period of hiatus, largely attributed to Tamakoshi’s ongoing battle with liver cancer and the demands of his chemotherapy treatments. The author shared a message in the magazine, indicating he is drawing manga gradually while undergoing treatment and has a stock of three chapters prepared for readers. He expressed his dedication to the series and his intention to fully resume it within the year, despite a recent update on June 28 confirming the recurrence of cancer cells in his liver and the need for further chemotherapy.
Tamakoshi’s Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket manga initially launched in Monthly Gundam Ace in June 2021. The series offers a fresh perspective on the classic 1989 original video animation (OVA), retelling the poignant story from the viewpoint of Christina “Chris” MacKenzie, a key character in the original narrative. The manga’s fourth compiled book volume was published in December 2023, shortly before its most recent hiatus. Tamakoshi had previously announced a diagnosis of stage 3 cancer in September 2022, leading to an earlier hiatus before the manga briefly resumed in May 2023.
