The Premise: Hunting Urban Legends

The series delves into a world where creepypastas, cryptid sightings, and paranormal activities are not just online rumors but real threats. Yen Press, which publishes the English version of the novels, describes the narrative as exploring what happens when unlucky individuals encounter these true legends, and their potential salvation if they cross paths with the enigmatic boy.
Creative Team Behind the Original Novels
The “Horror Collector” novel series is penned by Midori Sato, with Norio Tsuruta serving as supervisor. The original character designs for the novels are handled by Yon. This creative trio has been instrumental in developing the distinct atmosphere and compelling storylines that define the series.
“Horror Collector” in Print: Novels and Manga
Before its anime debut, the “Horror Collector” franchise has a significant presence in the literary world, both through its original novels and a manga adaptation.
The Enduring Popularity of the Novels
The original “Horror Collector” novel series began its release in Japan in June 2015, with Kadokawa publishing the books. As of December 2025, the series boasts a substantial catalog, with its 26th volume released in June and the 27th volume scheduled for December 10. Yen Press is actively releasing the English versions of these novels, contributing to their international reach.
Manga Adaptation and English Release
In addition to the novels, the “Horror Collector” universe expanded with a manga adaptation illustrated by Niko Yuki. This manga ran in Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Gene magazine from 2021 to 2022 and was later compiled into a single volume released in March 2022. Yen Press has also published the manga adaptation in English, making it accessible to a wider audience through its “JY for Kids” middle-grade imprint. The English manga includes tales such as “The Boy in the Red Hood,” “The Golden Pay Phone,” and “The Faceless Kid.”
What to Expect from the Anime
While specific details regarding the anime’s staff and cast are yet to be announced, the premise suggests an adaptation that will likely maintain the mysterious and supernatural tone of the original works.
