Tsuburaya Productions and Toei Animation have officially released a concept movie for their co-produced CG anime project, Kaiju Decode: The Ring of Aidara (also known as Kaiju Decode: Aidara no Yubiwa). The new anime is part of the broader “KAIJU DECODE” transmedia initiative, which centers around the theme of “a story of a kaiju and a girl.” The concept movie provides an initial glimpse into the world and characters of this highly anticipated collaboration.
A New Chapter in the “KAIJU DECODE” Project
The Kaiju Decode project, a joint effort between special effects powerhouse Tsuburaya Productions and animation giant Toei Animation, was initially announced in November 2019. The initiative aims to create high-quality animated works that resonate with a global audience, blending Tsuburaya’s expertise in monster special effects with Toei Animation’s extensive history in character-driven storytelling.
Prior to The Ring of Aidara, the “KAIJU DECODE” project has explored various media formats. This includes a 9-minute short anime titled KAIJU DECODE, which is available on TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION, and a VR anime called KAIJU DECODE -first contact-, accessible on Meta Store. An MR (Mixed Reality) game, KAIJU DECODE -super multiverse MR-, has also been released on Meta Store. These preceding works established the foundational themes and world-building for the universe of Kaiju Decode.
Story and Setting of The Ring of Aidara
Kaiju Decode: The Ring of Aidara is set in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, in the year 2070. The narrative unfolds in a world dramatically altered by “The Skyfall Catastrophe,” an event where space stations fell to Earth after a supernova explosion, introducing unknown bacteria that fused with Earth’s materials to create hyper-dimensional lifeforms, referred to as kaiju.
The story focuses on two distinct societies and their inhabitants:
- The City: A peaceful society built by humanity to survive, where residents live free from the limitations of body, mind, space, and time. Maru, a kind-hearted boy with a strong sense of justice, is a resident of The City.
- The Zone: A dangerous land where hyper-dimensional lifeforms, or kaiju, thrive. Coco, a clever and curious girl from the Aidara tribe, lives in The Zone and coexists with these kaiju.
The central plot revolves around Maru and Coco, two individuals from opposing worlds, as they search for a way for their respective societies to coexist peacefully. The anime explores their journey of meeting, learning, and growing together despite their vastly different upbringings and environments.
Cast and Production Details
The concept movie’s release also accompanied the announcement of key cast members for Kaiju Decode: The Ring of Aidara. Aya Yamane voices Maru, portraying him as a straightforward, pure-hearted boy with a strong sense of justice. Karin Takahashi takes on the role of Coco, a resilient kaiju tamer who maintains an innocent, girlish charm. Both voice actors have shared their enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the deep human conflicts and engaging plot despite the futuristic setting.
The project benefits from the combined production expertise of Kouichi Noguchi from Toei Animation and Masahiro Onda from Tsuburaya Productions, both seasoned producers with a history of high-quality animation and special effects works. An illustration for the anime was released by JNTHED, known for his work on Urusei Yatsura remake and Spriggan.
