The World of “King’s Proposal”
“King’s Proposal” introduces readers to a compelling fantasy world centered around powerful mages and imminent threats to humanity. The plot follows Mushiki Kuga, an ordinary high school student whose life takes an extraordinary turn. When Saika Kuozaki, the most formidable mage in existence and the sole protector against “annihilation factors” that threaten to destroy the world every three hundred hours, is mortally wounded, she performs a desperate act.
A Boy in a Mage’s Body
In a dramatic twist, Saika bequeaths her immense powers and even her physical body to Mushiki Kuga, the normal high school boy who discovers her. Suddenly thrust into a role he’s ill-equipped for, Mushiki finds himself inhabiting Saika’s body and inheriting her monumental responsibilities. The narrative then follows his struggle to master these newfound, colossal powers while attending an academy for mages, all while meticulously maintaining the facade of being Saika and concealing his true identity from both students and faculty, as well as lurking enemies.
From Light Novel to Manga and Beyond
The “King’s Proposal” light novel series, penned by Koushi Tachibana and illustrated by Tsunako, began its serialization under Fujimi Shobo’s Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint in September 2021. As of August 2025, eight volumes of the light novels have been released in Japan. For English-speaking audiences, Yen Press has licensed and published the light novels, making the series accessible internationally.
In addition to the light novel, a web manga adaptation illustrated by Nemo Kurio has been running on Square Enix’s Gangan Online website since February 2023, with six tankōbon volumes currently available. The series has garnered attention, ranking 13th in the new work category of Takarajimasha’s annual light novel guide book Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in 2023.
