Kojima Productions has officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for an animated film set in the Death Stranding universe, currently operating under the working title Death Stranding: Mosquito. The announcement came during the studio’s “Beyond the Strand” presentation in Tokyo, revealing key staff members and offering a glimpse into the film’s distinctive art style.
The animated project, separate from the previously announced live-action film adaptation by A24, will feature an entirely new story within the expansive Death Stranding world, introducing a new main character while potentially bringing back familiar faces like Sam Bridges.
Unveiling the Death Stranding: Mosquito Teaser
The debut teaser trailer for Death Stranding: Mosquito showcased a unique visual approach, characterized by a bold, comic-book-style aesthetic with notable pencil-like shading. The animation, which combines hand-drawn lines with digital assembly, depicts a mysterious new protagonist. The clip features this character swimming through water, seemingly with a “gooey” or “needle-like BT” appendage on their face, before engaging in a fight with a porter in a Timefall environment.
The working title “Mosquito” is said to directly reference this new main character, who possesses the ability to “suck something” – though specifically “not blood.” The exact nature of this ability and the character’s role in the Death Stranding narrative remain largely under wraps, adding to the intrigue generated by the teaser.
Creative Team Behind the Animation
A strong creative team has been assembled to bring Death Stranding: Mosquito to life. Hideo Kojima himself is serving as a producer on the project, ensuring its alignment with his unique vision for the franchise.
Director Hiroshi Miyamoto at the Helm
Directing the animated feature is Hiroshi Miyamoto, known for his work on several prominent animation titles, including Dragon Ball movies and Eiga Precure Dream Stars. Miyamoto’s experience is expected to shape the film’s visual storytelling and overall tone.
Aaron Guzikowski Pens the Screenplay
The scenario script for Death Stranding: Mosquito is being penned by Aaron Guzikowski, a screenwriter with a notable filmography that includes Prisoners and Raised by Wolves. His involvement suggests a narrative depth congruent with the complex themes of the Death Stranding universe.
Animation and Art Direction
ABC Animation Studio, recognized for producing acclaimed anime such as A Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden movies, is handling the animation production for Death Stranding: Mosquito. Additionally, Studio Easter, which contributed to the backgrounds of the popular anime Dandadan, is responsible for the film’s environmental artistry. The collaborative efforts of these studios are aimed at creating a visually distinct experience that differentiates it from other contemporary anime.
A New Chapter in the Death Stranding Universe
While details about the plot, specific characters, and a definitive release date are yet to be announced, Death Stranding: Mosquito promises to expand the lore of the post-apocalyptic world Hideo Kojima first introduced in the critically acclaimed video game. This animated film is poised to delve into untold stories and introduce new perspectives within a universe continually celebrated for its unique atmosphere and narrative ambition. The project underscores Kojima Productions’ ongoing commitment to diversifying the Death Stranding intellectual property across various media formats.
