Delving into the Heartwarming Story of “Papa and Daddy’s Home Cooking”
Yū Toyota’s original manga tells the heartwarming story of two single fathers navigating the challenges and joys of raising their children together under one roof. Akira Sengoku, a chiropractor, suddenly finds himself solely responsible for his daughter, Airi, after his ex-girlfriend entrusts her to him. Seeking support, he turns to his friend, Masahiro Harumi, a manga editor who is also a single father to his son, Seiichirō, following a divorce.
The narrative unfolds as these two men, initially overwhelmed by their new parenting roles, decide to share an apartment in the suburbs. Their shared struggle quickly centers around the essential task of providing good, home-cooked meals for their children, leading them to discover the profound connection between food and family life. The manga is praised for its relaxed, slice-of-life approach, highlighting the organic growth of the characters and the simple realities of family life, often incorporating recipes for the dishes featured.
Manga’s Journey and Previous Adaptations
The Papa and Daddy’s Home Cooking manga originally launched in Shinchosha’s Monthly Comic @Bunch magazine in April 2014 and concluded its run in July 2020. Shinchosha compiled the series into 13 volumes, with the final volume released in October 2020. The manga has garnered significant readership, boasting 2.6 million copies in circulation as of August 2023.
While the live-action series marks a new chapter for the franchise, the manga also inspired a spin-off titled Papa to Oyaji no Uchi Nomi (Papa and Daddy’s Home Drinking), which ran from April 2016 to July 2021. Yū Toyota is also known for another popular work, Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!, which received its own live-action television series in October 2020. Digital English releases of Papa and Daddy’s Home Cooking were previously available through platforms like Mangamo, Comikey, and Manga Planet, although they are no longer accessible on those services.
