The first two “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” compilation films, “Beginnings” and “Eternal,” are being re-edited into an 11-episode television series set to begin airing on October 12. The “TV Edition” will be broadcast in Japan on MBS and TBS during their Sunday 5 PM anime slot.
Re-Edited Films to Refresh Viewers
The decision to air a re-edited version of the 2012 compilation films, titled “Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Beginning/The Eternal Story TV Edition,” comes as anticipation builds for the upcoming new animated film, “Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten” (Walpurgisnacht: Rising), slated for release in February 2026. This TV broadcast aims to refresh viewers’ memories of the critically acclaimed series.
The original “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” television anime, a 12-episode series, first premiered in January 2011. It gained widespread popularity for its unique take on the magical girl genre, combining heartwarming visuals with a profound world setting and dramatic developments. The original series was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo and produced by Shaft, with Ume Aoki as the original character designer, Gen Urobuchi as the scriptwriter, and Yuki Kajiura composing the music.
From TV to Film and Back Again
The two compilation films, “Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Part 1 – Beginnings” and “Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Part 2 – Eternal Story,” were released in October 2012. These films served as a recap of the original television series, featuring redone voice acting and some newly animated footage. Following these, an original third film, “Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion,” premiered in October 2013, becoming the first late-night anime film to surpass 2 billion yen in box office revenue.
The upcoming “Walpurgis no Kaiten” film is positioned as the “legitimate sequel” to “Rebellion,” marking the first new “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” film in approximately 12 years. Key staff members, including general director Akiyuki Shinbo, are expected to return for the new movie.
A commercial featuring characters such as Kaname Madoka, Akemi Homura, and Kyubey has been released on YouTube to promote the upcoming “TV Edition” broadcast.
