Mamoru Hosoda’s highly anticipated anime feature, “Scarlet,” has unveiled its ending theme song, titled “Hateshinaki” (“Endless”), in a special promotional video. The song is performed by actress Mana Ashida, who also takes on the leading role of Princess Scarlet in the film. This latest revelation offers audiences an emotional glimpse into the world of the dark revenge fantasy, ahead of its Japanese premiere on November 21, 2025.
Mana Ashida Lends Her Voice to the Film’s Climax
The ending theme “Hateshinaki” is a pivotal element of “Scarlet,” with its lyrics penned by director Mamoru Hosoda himself. Hosoda envisioned the song as an integral part of the film’s narrative, embodying Princess Scarlet’s “endless journey”. Mana Ashida, known for her acting prowess, delivers the song with a clear and gentle voice, portraying a compassionate side of Scarlet that wishes for peace, reminiscent of her late father, King Amlet.
Composer Taisei Iwasaki, who previously earned a Japan Academy Prize for Best Music for Hosoda’s “Belle,” returns to oversee the sound for “Scarlet” as its sound supervisor. Iwasaki also composed “Hateshinaki,” crafting a piece that allowed Ashida creative freedom during the recording process, resulting in a unique and expressive performance.
Special Teaser Introduces the Song to Japanese Audiences
The first public unveiling of “Hateshinaki” occurred during a special teaser that aired immediately after a broadcast of Hosoda’s earlier film, “Wolf Children,” on the Japanese TV program “Friday Road Show.” Following this, a dedicated promotional video featuring the song and new scenes from “Scarlet” was released, providing fans with an early taste of the film’s evocative atmosphere.
“Scarlet”: A Dark Fantasy Exploring Life and Death
“Scarlet” marks Mamoru Hosoda‘s first new work in approximately four years since “Belle” and is described as a striking departure from his past projects. Hosoda has stated his aim to create “a powerful film that questions what it means to live and invites the audience to think about this theme together.”
The story centers on Princess Scarlet, who, after a failed attempt to avenge her father’s death, embarks on a perilous journey into the Land of the Dead. There, she seeks to confront her nemesis once more. The film delves into themes of life and death, incorporating elements of action and romance within its revenge fantasy premise.
International Release and Previous Previews
“Scarlet” is set to premiere in Japanese cinemas on November 21, 2025, with both regular and IMAX screenings planned. Following its debut in Japan, the film will commence its global rollout in December, beginning with a release in the United States.
Prior to this song reveal, “Scarlet” garnered attention with its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2025, and subsequent screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. These early viewings underscored the film’s unique visual direction and narrative depth, with previous trailers showcasing its gorgeous 3D animation.
