The official X (formerly Twitter) account for animator Yōhei Kameyama’s “Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express” has unveiled a teaser trailer for the anime’s re-edited theatrical release, confirming its full title as “Ginga Tokkyū Milky☆Subway Kakueki Teisha Gekijō Iki” (Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express: Local Train to the Theater) and a February 6, 2026, premiere in Japan. This upcoming film is a re-edited compilation of the original 12-episode anime series, enhanced with brand new content for the big screen.
The Journey to the Big Screen: From Web Series to Theatrical Release
“Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express” first launched as an anime series on July 3, 2025, broadcasting on Tokyo MX and simultaneously streaming on YouTube in 11 languages, including English. The series quickly garnered attention for its unique CG animation style and chaotic sci-fi comedy. Its theatrical debut marks a significant expansion for the franchise, building upon the foundation laid by Kameyama’s earlier work.
Creative Vision and Production Team
Yōhei Kameyama, the driving force behind the “Milky☆Subway” universe, is once again at the helm for the theatrical film. He is credited with directing, writing, producing, and handling much of the creative workload, including character designs, modeling, animation, and editing. Kameyama initially gained recognition for his 2022 CG anime short, “Milky☆Highway,” which served as a precursor to “Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express.” Bit Grooove Promotion is responsible for the film’s sound production.
Returning Cast and Core Narrative
The main voice cast members, Momoka Terasawa as Chiharu and Anna Nagase as Makina, will reprise their roles for the film. Other additional cast members from the original series are also set to return.
The narrative centers on super human Chiharu and cyborg Makina, who find themselves in hot water after violating space traffic laws. As a result, they are sentenced to community service, which involves cleaning the dilapidated interplanetary train known as the “Milky☆Subway.” However, what begins as a seemingly simple task spirals into interstellar chaos when the train unexpectedly goes rogue, propelling its misfit crew into deep space. The tagline for the series, “No purpose! No principle! No point! A never-before-seen space-train spectacle, powered by nothing but pure momentum!” perfectly encapsulates the frantic and comedic essence of the story.
The theme song for the project is “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), a 1977 track by the iconic Japanese girl group Candies.
