The official website for the popular anime series Girls Band Cry has announced the production of a brand-new, original film, exciting fans just ahead of the release of two previously announced compilation movies. The announcement was made on Tuesday, accompanied by a new teaser visual.
This upcoming film, produced by Toei Animation, will feature a completely new story set within the Girls Band Cry universe. While specific details regarding its plot, release date, or staff are yet to be revealed, the news has generated significant buzz among the anime’s dedicated fanbase.
Expanding the Girls Band Cry Universe
The Girls Band Cry multimedia project, a collaboration between Toei Animation, Agehasprings, and Universal Music Japan, began in 2023 with a strong focus on music. The original television anime series, which premiered in April 2024 and ran for 13 episodes, garnered positive reviews for its heartfelt portrayal of young women navigating life’s challenges through music.
The series follows Nina Iseri, a high school dropout who moves to Tokyo with aspirations of entering university. There, she encounters Momoka Kawaragi, a former member of the band Diamond Dust, and together they form a new band with three other girls: Subaru Awa, Tomo Ebizuka, and Rupa. The anime explores their individual struggles—from betrayal by friends to parental abandonment—and how their shared passion for music helps them find a sense of belonging and keep their dreams alive.
Previously Announced Compilation Films and Game
Prior to this new film announcement, a two-part compilation movie for Girls Band Cry was already in production, having been announced in September of last year. The first compilation film, titled “Seishun Kyо̄sо̄kyoku” (Rhapsody of Youth), is scheduled to premiere on October 3, 2025, followed by the second film, “Naa, Mirai.” (Hey, Future.), on November 14, 2025. These compilation films are expected to revisit the events of the television series.
In addition to the anime and films, the Girls Band Cry franchise is also expanding into gaming. A 2D platforming game titled Momoka (o) Wasshoi (Momoka Heave-Ho), inspired by the anime, is set to launch on September 28, 2025, for PC via Steam.

The Girls Band Cry anime has reached a global audience. Catchplay+ simulcast the anime with Indonesian and English subtitles starting May 31, 2024, making it the first service to officially offer English subtitles for the series. Toei Animation also released the anime digitally in North America on August 13, 2024, through platforms like Fandango at Home, Microsoft Store, Hoopla, and Amazon Prime Video. Crunchyroll began streaming the series worldwide outside of East Asia on November 6. A Thai dub was also announced in late June 2024 by distributor Cartoon Club.

Cast members Mirei and Natsu, who had temporarily gone on hiatus due to health reasons, returned to dialogue recording work by April 2025.
