The Journey of Takumi Iruma: From Light Novel to Anime
Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time originates from a light novel series written by Kogitsunemaru and illustrated by Hitogome. The series began its online publication on AlphaPolis’ website in August 2017, with the first volume released in February 2018. As of December 2024, the light novel series has accumulated 17 volumes. The novels gained recognition, winning the Reader Award at AlphaPolis’ 10th Fantasy Shōsetsu Award in 2017.
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Tarō Sasakama, also plays a significant role in the franchise’s popularity. It started serialization on AlphaPolis’ manga website in August 2018 and has been collected into eight tankōbon volumes as of December 2024. Alpha Manga is publishing the manga digitally in English under the same title. Tarō Sasakama even drew a celebratory image to commemorate the second season’s announcement.
The story follows Takumi Iruma, a seemingly ordinary individual who is accidentally summoned to a fantasy world called Mildgard along with a group of heroes. As compensation for the mix-up, a goddess grants him the ability to choose any skill he desires. Hoping for a peaceful life away from conflict, Takumi opts for “alchemy,” a seemingly mundane creation skill. However, he soon discovers that his alchemy skill is incredibly powerful, allowing him to create anything from holy swords to flying ships, transforming him into a wealthy merchant and an undefeatable force in battles. This unexpected twist leads him on a heartwarming adventure as “possibly the most powerful alchemist in another world.”
