The Pumpkin Night manga, a popular horror series, has announced an unexpected hiatus. Fans were informed that the break is due to health concerns affecting Seima Taniguchi, the artist behind the manga’s distinctive visuals. This news has left many followers concerned and eager for Taniguchi’s recovery.

The Announcement

On April 23, 2025, Masaya Hokazono, the writer, and Seima Taniguchi revealed in chapter 153 of Pumpkin Night on the LINE Manga platform that the series would be going on hiatus. The reason cited was to allow Taniguchi time to recover and focus on their health.

What is Pumpkin Night?

Pumpkin Night is a horror manga series penned by Masaya Hokazono and brought to life through the art of Seima Taniguchi. The story plunges into the terrifying world of Asumi, a high school girl who becomes entangled with a mysterious social media account named “Pumpkin Night.” The manga is known for its intense and graphic content.

The series has garnered attention for its disturbing themes and unique art style, quickly building a dedicated following. Manga Planet publishes the series in English, describing the story:

“Don’t read this at night! High school girl Asumi is more intrigued than terrified by the mysterious “Pumpkin Night” account that follows her social media profile. Asami follows back in curiosity, only to immediately regret it when Pumpkin Night comes to get her… Who is the face behind Pumpkin Night, and what led them to embark on this bloody rampage of revenge?”

Publication History

The manga was initially launched on the Manga Life Win website in 2016. It was later restarted on the LINE Manga app in August 2019, broadening its accessibility to readers. LINE Digital Frontier published the manga’s tenth compiled book volume on December 16.

Previous Hiatus

This isn’t the first time Pumpkin Night has been put on hold. The series had a brief hiatus in May 2021 and resumed in July of the same year. The manga’s second part concluded in December 2023, and the third part began in January 2024, only to be interrupted again due to the recent announcement.

Other Works by Hokazono

Masaya Hokazono has an extensive background in manga creation. Before Pumpkin Night, Hokazono serialized the Inugami manga in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine from 1996 to 2002, which spanned 14 volumes. He later created a modified version of Inugami titled Inugami Kai, which was compiled into 10 volumes. Manga Planet also publishes Hokazono’s Inugami Kai and Doctor Mordrid manga in English. Furthermore, Hokazono and Nao Kurebayashi launched the Naoko ~ Pumpkin Night Gaiden~ manga prequel in LINE Manga in June 2020.

Where to Read

Pumpkin Night is available on the LINE Manga app. However, it is only accessible in Japan and does not provide an official English translation.

The Impact on Fans

The hiatus has undoubtedly left fans disappointed, but most are understanding and supportive of Taniguchi’s need to prioritize their health. Many have expressed their hopes for a swift recovery and eagerly await the manga’s return.

Health in the Manga Industry

The manga industry is notorious for its demanding work schedules, which often take a toll on creators’ health. The pressure to meet deadlines, coupled with long hours spent drawing and writing, can lead to burnout and various health issues. This hiatus highlights the importance of prioritizing the well-being of manga artists and writers.
