Riki Taoka’s heartwarming slice-of-life manga, Kyō no Sanponta (Today’s Walk), is set to conclude its serialization in the upcoming chapter, which will be released on January 9. The announcement came in the January issue of Shogakukan’s Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine. The series, which has charmed readers since its debut in April 2020, follows the daily adventures of a dog named Ponta and his owner, Rieko.
A Bittersweet Farewell for “Today’s Walk”
The ending of Kyō no Sanponta marks a significant moment for fans who have followed Ponta and Rieko’s gentle, often humorous, walks. The manga, known for its focus on dog walking and the unique bond between a pet and its owner, has been a staple in Monthly Shonen Sunday for nearly five years. Shogakukan released the 11th compiled book volume of the series on August 8.
The Story of Ponta and Rieko
Kyō no Sanponta centers on the story of a Shiba Inu, Ponta, and his walker, a college student named Rieko. The narrative often features Rieko confiding her everyday troubles to Ponta during their walks, while the sarcastic dog offers witty internal commentary that his owner remains blissfully unaware of. This dynamic creates a “charming one-sided conversation” that has defined the series’ lighthearted and feel-good comedic tone.
Live-Action Adaptation on the Horizon
Despite the manga’s conclusion, the world of Kyō no Sanponta will continue to live on through a live-action drama adaptation. Announced in November 2024, the series is slated to premiere in February 2025 on Fuji TV TWO, with Yuzumi Shintani starring as Rieko. The drama is expected to capture the manga’s essence, promising fans a new way to experience the beloved characters and their endearing relationship. The adaptation will air two episodes per week for a total of eight episodes, with Riki Taoka himself sharing a commemorative illustration to celebrate the news.
Riki Taoka has a history of successful manga adaptations, with his earlier work, Wagahai no Heya de Aru (This Is My Room), also inspiring a live-action television series in 2017. This track record bodes well for the upcoming Kyō no Sanponta drama, offering a comforting continuation for those sad to see the manga end its print run.
