The highly anticipated TV anime adaptation of Takako Shimura’s “Scenes From Awajima” (Awajima Hyakkei) has unveiled its initial main cast and an April 2026 premiere date, with voice actress Ai Kayano notably absent from the current roster of announced talent.
The production, helmed by studio MADHOUSE, recently released its first promotional video, confirming Niina Nakabayashi in the role of Wakana Tabata and Yō Taichi as Kinue Takehara. These announcements were made in October 2025, alongside a character visual for Wakana Tabata.
Key Cast Members Revealed for Awajima Opera School Drama
The music drama anime, which centers on the competitive yet emotionally rich environment of Awajima Opera School, has officially introduced two of its central figures. Niina Nakabayashi will lend her voice to Wakana Tabata, a new student aspiring to become a musical star. Joining her is Yō Taichi, who will portray Kinue Takehara, the dorm leader who carries the aspirations of a close friend. Further character visuals are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
Despite previous speculation or potentially outdated information, recent official announcements and promotional materials for “Scenes From Awajima” have not included Ai Kayano in the confirmed cast list.
The Story of “Scenes From Awajima”
Based on Takako Shimura’s acclaimed manga series, “Scenes From Awajima” (Awajima Hyakkei) delves into the lives of young girls attending the prestigious Awajima Opera School. The story explores their dreams of standing on the grand stage, navigating a world filled with intense competition, profound friendships, admiration, and moments of jealousy. Yen Press has licensed the original manga for English publication, with the first volume slated for release in January 2026.

The “Scenes From Awajima” anime is being produced by the renowned studio MADHOUSE, known for its work on series such as “Chihayafuru” and “NANA”. Morio Asaka, who directed “Chihayafuru” and “NANA,” is helming the anime. The series composition is handled by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, with character designs by Kunihiko Hamada and music by Takahiro Obata. The anime is officially set to broadcast in April 2026.
