Masayuki Kusumi, renowned as the writer behind the popular “Solitary Gourmet” series, is set to launch a new gourmet manga titled Lunch Banchō Hitomi alongside artist Ryō Amei. The new series will debut in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine on October 17.
The announcement was made in the 19th issue of Young Gangan magazine, signaling an exciting new venture for fans of Kusumi’s distinctive take on food-centric narratives.
“Lunch Banchō Hitomi” Explores Intuitive Culinary Adventures
Lunch Banchō Hitomi introduces readers to Hitomi Shinōsaka, a character dubbed the “Lunch Banchō.” Hitomi possesses a unique “lunch antenna” that instinctively guides him to delectable and aromatic restaurants for his midday meals. This premise promises a fresh exploration of the everyday culinary experience, a theme Kusumi has masterfully woven into his previous works.
Ryō Amei shared the news on their X/Twitter account, expressing their commitment to faithfully delivering Kusumi’s world view through the new manga.
Masayuki Kusumi’s Enduring Legacy in Gourmet Manga
Masayuki Kusumi is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the gourmet manga genre. His most celebrated work, “Solitary Gourmet” (Kodoku no Gourmet), was created in collaboration with the late manga artist Jiro Taniguchi. The original manga was serialized from 1994 to 1996 in Fusosha’s Monthly Panja magazine. A second volume of the manga was published in September 2015.
The “Solitary Gourmet” Phenomenon
“Solitary Gourmet” has transcended the pages of manga to become a multimedia phenomenon. It has inspired nine live-action television series, several TV specials starring actor Yutaka Matsushige, and a live-action film that opened in Japan on January 10, 2025. Matsushige not only starred in the film but also took on directing and co-writing roles. The manga also received a net anime adaptation that debuted on Production I.G’s “Tate Anime” smartphone app in November 2017.
The series follows the solitary adventures of Gorō Inogashira, a salesman who travels across Japan, discovering and savoring meals at various local eateries. Its focus on the simple yet profound joy of eating alone and appreciating local cuisine has resonated deeply with audiences.
Ryō Amei’s Artistic Contribution
While Masayuki Kusumi brings his established storytelling prowess in the gourmet genre, Ryō Amei’s artistic interpretation will be key to shaping the visual identity and atmosphere of Lunch Banchō Hitomi. The collaboration is anticipated to offer a unique blend of Kusumi’s thematic depth and Amei’s distinctive art style, promising a compelling new series for manga enthusiasts. The debut on October 17 in Young Gangan is eagerly awaited by fans looking for their next culinary adventure in manga form.
