Fans of the popular science fiction manga Terraformars can mark their calendars: the series is slated to resume serialization on December 18, 2025. The announcement confirms that the manga will appear in the third 2026 issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine. This return follows the latest in a series of hiatuses that have paused the popular action series.
A Series of Pauses and Returns for Terraformars
The Terraformars manga, created by writer Yu Sasuga and illustrator Kenichi Tachibana, has experienced several interruptions in its serialization history, primarily due to Sasuga’s health issues. The series most recently went on hiatus on April 10, 2025, after having only just returned in April 2024 from a significant five-year break that began in December 2019. The prolonged absences have been a point of concern for its dedicated fanbase, eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story.
The upcoming resumption on December 18 was preceded by an announcement on November 4, confirming that the staff still aimed for a return before the end of the year, following earlier delays from a planned summer return to fall.
The Enduring Appeal of Terraformars
Terraformars debuted in January 2011 in Shueisha’s Miracle Jump magazine before moving to Weekly Young Jump in 2012. The series quickly garnered a strong following for its intense sci-fi horror premise. It tells the story of humanity’s attempt to terraform Mars using moss and cockroaches, only for the cockroaches to evolve into giant, aggressive, humanoid creatures known as “Terraformars.” Subsequent expeditions from Earth involve genetically enhanced human soldiers, each injected with animal DNA, to combat these formidable foes.
The manga has released 23 compiled volumes, with the 23rd volume shipping in July 2024. Its popularity led to a 13-episode anime adaptation in 2014, a second season titled Terraformars Revenge in 2016, and a live-action film in 2016. Crunchyroll has streamed both anime series. VIZ Media licenses the manga for release in North America.
