Norio Sakurai’s popular romantic comedy manga series, The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu), is officially set to conclude with its 14th compiled book volume. The announcement came with the release of the 13th volume, signaling the impending end for the beloved high school romance.
The Journey of The Dangers in My Heart
Penned and illustrated by Norio Sakurai, The Dangers in My Heart began its serialization on March 8, 2018, in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine. Shortly after, in April 2018, it transitioned to the Champion Cross manga website. Following a merger in July 2018, the series continued its run on Akita Shoten’s newly formed Manga Cross website, which was later relaunched as Champion Cross in April 2024. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the series for English publication, making it accessible to a broader international audience.
The manga intricately follows the burgeoning relationship between Kyotaro Ichikawa, an introverted middle schooler with chuunibyo tendencies who initially harbors dark fantasies, and Anna Yamada, the class idol who reveals herself to be surprisingly eccentric. Their evolving dynamic, filled with awkward yet heartfelt moments, has resonated deeply with readers.
A Beloved Romantic Comedy Reaches Its Climax
The Dangers in My Heart has garnered significant critical acclaim and commercial success throughout its run. The series has surpassed an impressive 7 million copies in circulation. Its popularity was further cemented by winning the 2020 Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Award in the Web Manga category and the Grand Prize at the 2021 Tsutaya Comic Awards. Fans have praised its delicate portrayal of youthful romance and the relatable growth of its main characters, Ichikawa and Yamada.
As of January 2026, 13 tankōbon volumes have been released in Japan, building anticipation for the upcoming finale. The conclusion in its 14th volume promises to bring a definitive end to Ichikawa and Yamada’s middle school love story.
Anime Adaptations and Further Ventures
The manga’s success led to an anime television series adaptation produced by Shin-Ei Animation. The first season aired from April to June 2023, captivating viewers with its faithful adaptation of the manga’s charm. A second season followed, airing from January to March 2024. HIDIVE streamed the anime as it aired in Japan, also providing an English dub for the second season.
Beyond the TV series, the franchise expanded with a short spin-off original net animation (ONA) released in December 2023. A compilation film, The Dangers in My Heart: The Movie, is also set to open in Japan on February 13, 2026, with plans for theatrical releases in multiple international territories, including the United States, Germany, and Italy. This film is expected to include new footage and depict the story of Kyotaro and Anna after the series finale, offering fans an extended look into their future. Additionally, a light novel adaptation by Kota Nozomi, with illustrations by Sakurai and sune, was released in September 2024, and a spin-off manga focusing on Kyotaro’s older sister Kana began serialization in July 2025.
Author’s Message to Fans
Upon the announcement of the impending finale, author Norio Sakurai shared a heartfelt message with readers in the 13th volume. Sakurai stated, “Understanding your own heart and sympathizing with your partner is what connects you two, is what I wanted to convey in Volume 13. The next volume will be the final volume at last. Please watch over the world of these two until the end!” This message hints at a concluding narrative that emphasizes emotional growth and connection, themes central to the series.
Fans eagerly await the release of the 14th volume to witness the culmination of Kyotaro Ichikawa and Anna Yamada’s endearing journey, celebrating the end of a significant chapter in romantic comedy manga.
