Fans of the mystery-adventure series The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru.) can mark their calendars, as the anime’s second season is officially slated for a July 2026 premiere. The announcement was made during the MF Bunko J Autumn School Festival special program on Sunday, November 16, 2025, alongside the release of a new teaser video and character designs for Scarlet and Mia.
July 2026 Premiere Confirmed with Teaser
The highly anticipated second season will begin broadcasting in July 2026. This confirmation came with a teaser video that offered a glimpse into the upcoming storyline and showcased new character designs for Scarlet and Mia. A teaser visual, featuring Siesta with a faint smile next to a monitor reflecting her face, was previously revealed in July 2025, confirming a 2026 release window. The sequel was initially announced in July 2022.
Key Cast and Staff Return for Season 2
The production team behind the first season will largely be returning for The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2. Manabu Kurihara is back in the director’s chair at Studio ENGI, with Deko Akao once again handling the series scripts and Yosuke Ito returning as the character designer.

The series follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man with a knack for stumbling into trouble, who became the assistant to the brilliant, silver-haired detective Siesta. Together, they embarked on a globe-trotting adventure, solving mysteries and fighting against a secret organization. However, Siesta mysteriously died, leaving Kimihiko to navigate a world still full of intrigue, carrying her legacy forward.
The first season, which premiered in July 2021 with a one-hour special and ran for 12 episodes, left audiences eager for more of Kimihiko’s journey as he continues to encounter individuals connected to his past with Siesta. The upcoming season is expected to delve deeper into the mysteries surrounding Siesta’s death and her enduring influence on Kimihiko and his new companions.
The Original Light Novel Series
The Detective Is Already Dead anime is based on the popular light novel series written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibōzu. The first volume of the light novel was published in November 2019 under Kadokawa’s MF Bunko J imprint and won the 15th MF Bunko J newcomer award the same year. Yen Press publishes the original novels in English. The franchise has also seen multiple manga adaptations and a spinoff novel. The original light novel series continues to expand, with its 13th volume released in Japan on July 25, 2025.
With a returning core staff and cast, and a solid foundation in its source material, The Detective Is Already Dead Season 2 promises to deliver another thrilling installment of mystery and adventure in July 2026.
