Kadokawa has officially announced that the highly anticipated second season of the television anime adaptation of Nigojū and Umibōzu’s light novel series, The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru.), will premiere in 2026. The announcement on Tuesday included confirmation of the returning main cast and key production staff, alongside the unveiling of a new teaser visual.
The second season was initially teased in July 2022, building anticipation among fans of the mystery-adventure series.
Core Team Returns for Second Season Production
The production team behind the acclaimed first season will largely be reprising their roles, ensuring continuity in the anime’s direction and visual style.
Director and Script Supervision
Manabu Kurihara is set to return as the director, leading the production at animation studio ENGI. Deko Akao will also be back to oversee the series scripts, maintaining the narrative flow and character development from the previous season.
Character Design
Yōsuke Itō is confirmed to return as the character designer, ensuring that the visual aesthetic of the beloved characters remains consistent. ENGI will once again handle the animation production.

Series Background and Plot Overview
The Detective Is Already Dead light novel series, written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibōzu, first began publication in November 2019 under Kadokawa’s MF Bunko J imprint. The novel notably won the 15th MF Bunko J newcomer award in 2019. Yen Press publishes the original novels and manga adaptations in English.
The story follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man with a knack for getting into trouble, who becomes the assistant to the brilliant, globe-trotting detective Siesta. Together, they embark on a series of mysteries and adventures. However, the premise of the series revolves around Siesta’s mysterious death, and how her legacy continues to influence Kimihiko and others in the aftermath.
The first season of the anime premiered with a one-hour special in July 2021 and ran for 12 episodes. Funimation, and later Crunchyroll, streamed the first season, including an English dub.
