The Premise: From Discarded Swordsman to Ultimate All-Rounder
The fantasy story centers on Orun, a swordsman who, for the sake of his “Hero’s Party,” adapted to become a mage, even developing a unique style of magic to support his companions. Despite his dedicated efforts, Orun is unceremoniously expelled from the party by his childhood friend and leader, Oliver, who deems him lacking in ability and dismisses him as a “jack of all trades but master of none.” His party members’ mockery and the swift replacement by a successor leave Orun disillusioned.
Disappointed but determined, Orun embarks on a solo journey as an explorer. His path takes a dramatic turn with new encounters, driving him to leverage his versatile “jack of all trades” skills to become the “ultimate all-rounder” and protect those who have become important to him.
Origins in Light Novels and Manga
The anime is based on the popular light novel series written by Itsuki Togami and illustrated by Yuri Kisaragi. The series originally began serialization on the user-generated web novel publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in February 2021. Kodansha later acquired the series, publishing it under their Kodansha Ranobe Books imprint, with eight volumes released as of December 2024.
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Yonezou, also commenced serialization on Kodansha’s Nico Nico Seiga-based Suiyōbi no Sirius website in October 2021. As of June 2025, the manga has been compiled into fifteen volumes. The franchise, encompassing both light novels and manga, boasts over 3.8 million copies in circulation.
