The temporary break comes amidst recent announcements regarding the future of The New Prince of Tennis. Creator Takeshi Konomi revealed in July 2025 that he plans to conclude the manga’s serialization within the next year. This signifies that the series is heading into its final arc, having been ongoing in Jump Square since 2009 as a sequel to the original The Prince of Tennis manga.
A Long and Successful Run
The New Prince of Tennis picks up after the national tournament, following middle school tennis prodigy Ryōma Echizen as he joins Japan’s top training camp for players under 17. The original The Prince of Tennis manga ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2008, establishing a broad and dedicated fanbase.
Over its extensive run, the franchise has inspired numerous adaptations, including a 2001-2005 television anime series, multiple anime feature films, original video anime projects, a live-action film, a Chinese live-action television series, and a highly popular stage musical series. More recently, the Shin Tennis no Ōji-sama U-17 World Cup anime series premiered in July 2022, marking the first new television series in the franchise in roughly a decade, followed by a sequel series titled Shin Tennis no Ōji-sama U-17 World Cup Semifinal which premiered in October 2024.
