The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Sai Naekawa’s dark yuri manga, “This Monster Wants to Eat Me” (Watashi o Tabetai, Hito de Nashi), has revealed a new trailer and a “global visual,” confirming its U.S. debut at Otakon. The series is slated to premiere in Japan in October 2025.

Global Visual and Latest Trailer Revealed

A new global visual for “This Monster Wants to Eat Me” has been released, offering a contrasting tone to previous lighter visuals. This illustration is darker and more sinister, featuring the character Shiori Oumi with lengthy claws, seemingly covered in blood. Additionally, a new “reveal trailer” or “special trailer” accompanies these announcements, providing a deeper look into the anime’s atmosphere and characters. Prior trailers, including a teaser and an official trailer, have also been previously released, showcasing the series’ premise and key voice cast.

U.S. Premiere Set for Otakon

Fans in the United States will have an early opportunity to experience “This Monster Wants to Eat Me” as its first episode is confirmed for a U.S. premiere at Otakon. This event will take place in August at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. The premiere will be accompanied by a special talk session featuring key individuals behind the series: manga creator Sai Naekawa, manga editor Takumi Kamemaru, and anime producer Ena Hamabe. They are expected to share exclusive insights into the creation of both the manga and the anime, offering fans a unique behind-the-scenes perspective months before the series’ official streaming launch.

The anime will also have a presence at other international conventions, including a stage event at Japan Expo Paris in July and a feature at the PONY CANYON booth during Anime Expo in Los Angeles in July.

Synopsis and Production Details

“This Monster Wants to Eat Me” tells the story of Hinako, a high school student who, after losing her family in an accident, harbors a vague wish to die. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a mermaid named Shiori. Shiori reveals that Hinako’s flesh and blood are exceptionally delicious to yōkai. Desiring to consume Hinako herself, Shiori promises to protect her from other yōkai until Hinako reaches her most “delicious” state, at which point Shiori intends to eat her. Given her feelings about the accident, Hinako accepts this peculiar fate, leading to an unlikely and complex relationship between the monster and her intended prey.

The anime adaptation is produced by Studio Lings, with Infinite handling general production. Naoyuki Kuzuya serves as chief director, and Yūsuke Suzuki is directing the series. Mitsutaka Hirota is responsible for the series composition and scripts, while Sō Ikuyama (also known as Nozomi Ikuyama) is designing the characters. Keiji Inai is composing the music. The main voice cast includes Reina Ueda as Hinako Yaotose, Yui Ishikawa as Shiori Oumi, and Fairouz Ai as Miko Yashiro.
