TOHO animation has officially announced a new Godzilla anime series, set to introduce an unprecedented protagonist to the franchise’s 70-year history: a young boy who possesses the very power of Godzilla. The revelation, made on Saturday at Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2025, marks a bold new direction for the iconic kaiju.
A Unique Vision: Boy with Godzilla’s Power
The forthcoming anime series will center on a boy capable of wielding Godzilla’s immense power, a narrative departure that has already captured significant attention. Concept art unveiled alongside the announcement depicts this unique protagonist poised to unleash a “radiant heat ray,” a signature ability of the King of the Monsters. The Godzilla franchise’s official X/Twitter account teased the intriguing question, “Is that boy human, or Godzilla?”, hinting at the core mystery and themes of the new series.
Keiji Ota, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Head of IP & Animation Division, and Chief Godzilla Officer (CGO) at Toho, commented on the creative choice. He stated that Godzilla has historically served as a mirror reflecting the times, and this new film, with its boy protagonist possessing Godzilla’s power, aims to portray “more deeply both the fear and hope of the current era.” Ota emphasized this project as a “challenge to step into a new story” for TOHO animation.
Collaboration with Acclaimed Animation Studios
The production of this ambitious new anime will be a collaborative effort between two notable animation powerhouses: Orange and the Thai animation studio IGLOO STUDIO.
Orange is no stranger to the Godzilla universe, having previously worked on Godzilla Singular Point, a Netflix anime series that premiered in 2021. The studio is also critically acclaimed for its work on Beastars. Their involvement suggests a continuation of high-quality animation, potentially blending hand-drawn and CG elements, as seen in their previous projects. Sumiyoshi Waki, a producer at Orange, expressed excitement, stating, “We hope to reflect that passion even more strongly in this Godzilla film through the techniques and directing we have cultivated so far, including ‘Godzilla SP
Joining Orange is IGLOO STUDIO, an emerging Thai animation studio known for its work on My Daemon. This international collaboration underscores Toho’s expanding global reach and its willingness to partner with diverse talent to bring fresh perspectives to the Godzilla lore. Nat Yossawattananont of Igloo Studio shared their honor in being involved with the influential Godzilla IP, hoping to “project the various thoughts and feelings of people around the world living in this modern era into the Godzilla story.”
While concept art has been revealed, the official title of the series and further details regarding its cast, staff, and release window are expected to be announced at a later date.
Godzilla’s Enduring Legacy and Expanding Universe
This latest anime announcement comes amidst a period of significant expansion for the Godzilla franchise across various media. Toho has shown a renewed commitment to diversifying its content, investing heavily in film, animation, games, and merchandise.
The success of recent live-action films like 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, which garnered critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, has further energized the franchise. A sequel to Godzilla Minus One, titled Godzilla Minus Zero, is already in production with Takashi Yamazaki returning to direct, aiming for a late 2026 global release. These live-action cinematic efforts are distinct from the animated projects, showcasing Toho’s strategy of maintaining multiple, independent continuities to cater to a broad audience.
Beyond the big screen, the Godzilla IP continues to thrive. There are ongoing developments within Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse, including the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Toho itself has indicated plans for additional Godzilla console games and amusement attractions. The consistent stream of new content, both from Japan and internationally, highlights Godzilla’s enduring appeal and its cultural significance across generations.
The introduction of a human protagonist fused with Godzilla’s power in this new anime series signifies Toho’s willingness to innovate and explore new narrative territories within its cherished kaiju universe, promising an exciting future for fans worldwide.
