The Story of “Toritsukare Otoko”
The film is based on Shinji Ishii’s novel, originally published in 2001. “Toritsukare Otoko” tells the story of Giuseppe, a young man known in his town for becoming intensely absorbed in whatever fascinates him at a given moment, to the exclusion of everything else. This peculiar trait earns him the nickname “Toritsukare Otoko” or “Obsessed Man.”
Giuseppe’s Obsessions and a New Love
Giuseppe’s obsessions can be unpredictable, ranging from detective work to singing. His abilities even extend to speaking with rats, a skill he picked up through conversations with his homeless rat companion, Cielo. The narrative takes a romantic turn when Giuseppe encounters Pechka, a girl who sells balloons, and falls in love with her at first sight.
Helping Pechka: A Story of Compassion
As Giuseppe attempts to grow closer to Pechka, he discovers a profound sadness weighing on her heart. Driven by his newfound obsession with Pechka, Giuseppe, alongside Cielo, endeavors to secretly help her overcome her worries by utilizing the diverse skills and knowledge he’s accumulated from his past obsessions. The film is described as a love story that highlights the beauty of caring for and assisting others.
