Toshiya Miyata’s acclaimed debut light novel series, “Kyōkai no Melody” (Boundary Melody), is officially being adapted into a TV anime. The announcement has been met with excitement, particularly among fans of Miyata, a prominent member of the popular Japanese boy band Kis-My-Ft2, who is also known for his deep love of anime.
Kis-My-Ft2’s Toshiya Miyata Ventures into Anime with His Debut Work
The transition of “Kyōkai no Melody” from a celebrated light novel to a TV anime marks a significant milestone for Toshiya Miyata. As a multi-talented artist, Miyata has established himself as a singer, actor, TV personality, and voice actor. His public persona often includes his self-professed “otaku” passion for anime, making this adaptation a deeply personal and long-cherished dream come true for him.
Miyata expressed his joy and a profound sense of responsibility regarding the adaptation. “I have loved anime since I was a child, and I have always wanted to make my own anime one day!” he commented. He further added, “In order to make my dream come true, I learned how to write novels and created light novels, and have come this far. When it was decided that it would be made into an anime, I was really happy, but because I love anime, I also felt pressure not to make it a half-baked work. I would be happy if you could support one anime otaku who has the dream of making an anime and is making it come true.”
“Kyōkai no Melody” Plot and Acclaim
“Kyōkai no Melody” is a coming-of-age youth drama centered around the themes of music, loss, and resurgence. The story introduces Kyōsuke Tsurumaki, a musician who abandons his passion after his partner, Kai Amano, tragically dies in an accident just before their major debut. Three years later, the narrative takes a fantastical turn when Kai’s spirit suddenly appears before Kyōsuke, motivating him to confront his grief and embrace music once again. The novel’s emotionally resonant storytelling, coupled with Miyata’s vivid musical descriptions, quickly garnered significant acclaim. It notably won four major awards, including first place in the Bunko category of the Next Light Novel Awards 2024.
Publication Details and Illustrator
The light novel, illustrated by LAM, whose notable works include visuals for “Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai 2023,” first began publication under Kadokawa Corporation’s Dengeki Bunko/Media Works Bunko imprint in May 2024. The second volume, “Kyōkai no Melody 2,” is slated for release on November 25, 2025.
Returning Voice Cast and Expanding Media Franchise
Adding to the anticipation, key voice actors from a previously released special-edition drama CD are set to reprise their roles for the TV anime. Kento Ito will voice Kyōsuke Tsurumaki, and Daisuke Sakuma of Snow Man will return as Kai Amano. Other returning cast members include Yuma Uchida as Takeshi, Shunsuke Takeuchi as Makoto, and Soma Saito as Minoru. A teaser video announcing the television adaptation has also been released.
The “Kyōkai no Melody” franchise is also expanding beyond novels and anime. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Ikuta Sugimoto (known for “Summer Wars”), began serialization in Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine in May 2025. The first volume of the manga adaptation is also scheduled for release on November 25, 2025, coinciding with the second light novel volume.
As of the current announcement, further details regarding the anime’s staff, animation studio, or precise premiere date have not yet been revealed. Fans eagerly await more information on this highly anticipated adaptation.
