Tubi, the free ad-supported streaming service, has announced the immediate availability of the classic magical girl anime series Sugar Sugar Rune. All 51 episodes of the 2005 television anime are now streaming in Japanese with English subtitles, offering fans a nostalgic journey into the world of rival witches competing for hearts.
The addition comes as a treat for anime enthusiasts, bringing a beloved series to a broader audience on the popular AVOD platform.
A Sweet Competition for the Magic World Throne
Sugar Sugar Rune centers on best friends Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux, two young witches who are also fierce rivals for the throne of the Magic World. To determine who will become the next queen, they are sent to the Human World with a crucial task: to collect “human hearts.” These hearts represent human emotions, with different colors signifying various feelings, and the witch who collects the most by the end of their stay will be crowned queen.
The series, which originally premiered in Japan in July 2005, explores themes of friendship, rivalry, and the complexities of human emotions through the magical adventures of Chocolat and Vanilla. Their contrasting personalities—Chocolat’s outgoing and fiery nature versus Vanilla’s shy and gentle demeanor—often lead to unexpected results in their quest to gather hearts, especially as they navigate human school life and encounters with mysterious figures like the enigmatic Pierre.
Diving into the Magical Realm
Viewers can now stream the complete first season, encompassing all 51 episodes, providing the full narrative arc of Chocolat and Vanilla’s time in the human world and their magical growth. The anime adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s manga captivated audiences with its unique premise and charming characters, and its availability on Tubi marks a significant moment for fans eager to revisit the series or for new viewers discovering it for the first time.
Tubi’s Expanding Anime Horizon
The inclusion of Sugar Sugar Rune further expands Tubi’s growing collection of anime titles. The platform has been actively curating a diverse library, catering to various tastes within the anime community. This move aligns with Tubi’s strategy to offer a wide array of content, including popular animated series, to its user base.
While Tubi is now home to the original 2005 series, it’s worth noting that Studio Khara, known for its work on the Evangelion series, announced in July 2025 a 20th-anniversary short film titled SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières, along with plans for a new, full 3DCG anime adaptation of Sugar Sugar Rune. This upcoming project will serve as a prologue to the original manga, signaling a renewed interest in the franchise. However, the series currently streaming on Tubi is the classic television anime that first brought the magical adventures of Chocolat and Vanilla to life.
