Plot and Setting

Übel Blatt is set in a medieval, fantasy-like landscape, where the story revolves around a young man named Köinzell. He is on a quest for revenge against those who betrayed him and were thought to be dead and now call themselves the “Seven Heroes of the Land.” This quest is set two decades after the betrayal. Twenty years prior, the Emperor sent fourteen youths to stop the invasion of Wischtech. Three perished, and four were labeled as traitors, known as the “Lances of Betrayal.” Only seven returned, becoming known as the “7 Heroes”.

Köinzell, who appears as a half-human child with a scar over his left eye, embarks on a bloody path of retribution, challenging the corrupted authority and the lies that have been perpetuated. The series promises a deep dive into a world of dark secrets, betrayal, and relentless vengeance.

Key Story Elements

The narrative is driven by several key plot elements:

  • Betrayal: The central conflict stems from a deep betrayal that occurred 20 years before the main events of the story. This act of treachery sets Köinzell on his path of revenge.
  • Revenge: Köinzell’s primary motivation is to seek justice for the wrongs he suffered. His quest is fraught with peril, and his methods are often brutal and unforgiving.
  • The Seven Heroes: These figures are revered as saviors, but Köinzell seeks to expose their dark secrets.
  • Corrupted Authority: The series portrays a world where those in power are often corrupt and use their positions for their own gain. Köinzell’s fight is not just against individuals but against a system of lies and deceit.

The first episode, titled “Durch Bruch (Breakthrough),” introduces Köinzell’s arrival at the border town of Rield Flemm. Here he befriends stowaways Peepi and Vid, as well as their guide, Altea. Together, they infiltrate an underground monastery, setting the stage for Köinzell’s quest for revenge.

Where to Watch

  • Japan: Tokyo MX, BS Nippon TV, AT-X, Kansai TV
  • International: Amazon Prime Video

The series is available for streaming one hour after the Japanese broadcast, making it accessible to a global audience.

Initial Reception

The first episode has already garnered some attention. While the show is praised for its action and dark fantasy elements, some reviewers have noted that the series throws viewers into the deep end, and some context for the opening scene is missing. However, the series does appear to have set the stage for a compelling narrative filled with revenge and mystery.

Conclusion

With the addition of these nine new cast members, the Übel Blatt anime is poised to deliver a powerful and engaging viewing experience. The series is a dark, gritty tale of betrayal and vengeance with a stellar cast and a dedicated production team. Fans of dark fantasy anime should certainly add Übel Blatt to their watchlist.
