After five years of serialization, the popular manga series Undead Unluck has reached its conclusion. The final chapter, chapter 239, was released today, marking the end of the supernatural action-comedy created by Yoshifumi Tozuka. The series, which began its run in January 2020 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, has garnered a dedicated global fanbase.

A Journey of Unluck and Immortality

Undead Unluck tells the story of Fuuko Izumo, an 18-year-old girl cursed with the ability to bring extreme bad luck to anyone she touches, and Andy, an immortal man who longs for death. Their meeting, which occurs when Fuuko is on the verge of committing suicide, sets the stage for a chaotic yet compelling journey. Andy, fascinated by Fuuko’s “Unluck” ability, believes she may be the key to finally ending his immortal existence. The unlikely duo is soon pursued by a mysterious organization called the Union.

The Union and the Negators

The Union, initially presented as an antagonist group, is revealed to be a heroic force working to defy the rules arbitrarily imposed by God. The organization consists of ten individuals known as Negators, each possessing unique abilities that allow them to negate specific rules of the world. Fuuko and Andy, seeking refuge from the organization’s pursuit, eventually join the Union. This decision throws them into a world of dangerous battles and unveils the mysteries surrounding their existence.

A Blend of Action, Comedy, and Supernatural Elements

Undead Unluck is celebrated for its unique blend of action, comedy, and supernatural elements. The series stands out from other shonen manga due to its unpredictable storyline, engaging characters, and creative battles. The dynamic between Fuuko and Andy, an odd-couple pairing, adds a layer of humor and heart to the story. Their chemistry, while initially topsy-turvy, evolves as they face challenges together.

Themes Explored

Beyond its action-packed sequences and comedic moments, Undead Unluck delves into deeper themes, such as friendship, the struggle with superpowers, and the significance of connections. The series explores the idea of defying fate and challenging predetermined rules. The characters, each with their own unique motivations and flaws, are exceptionally well-developed, making them relatable and endearing to readers.

The Manga’s Conclusion

The final chapter of Undead Unluck, chapter 239, is a longer-than-usual 26-page release, and features a special center color page. This marks the end of the manga’s serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series is compiled into 24 tankōbon volumes as of January 2025, with further volumes expected for release, including volumes 26 and 27 which are set to be released on April 4, 2025. A new novel is also slated for release on the same day.

A “Super Climax”

The term “super climax” was used to describe the final arc of the manga, a common term used in the manga industry to indicate the end of a story. This announcement, coupled with the French version of chapter 238 stating the next chapter would be the last, hinted at the series’ imminent conclusion. The final arc of the manga, which began in September 2024, featured a time skip, which caught some fans by surprise.

The Anime Adaptation

The popularity of Undead Unluck led to an anime television series adaptation, produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by David Production. The anime aired from October 2023 to March 2024, consisting of 24 episodes. The series is available for streaming on platforms such as Hulu and Disney+. The anime’s opening theme, titled “01,” is performed by Queen Bee, while the ending theme, “Know Me…,” is performed by Kairi Yagi.

A New Anime Project

A one-hour original anime featuring a new UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal) is set to release later this year, further expanding on the world of Undead Unluck. The anime adaptation has been well-received, introducing the series to a wider audience.

The Legacy of Undead Unluck

Undead Unluck, despite not achieving the same mainstream popularity as some of its contemporaries, has earned a dedicated fan base. Its unique premise, creative world-building, and compelling characters have cemented its place as a standout manga series of the 2020s. The series is praised for its risk-taking approach to storytelling, memorable characters, and its ability to blend action, humor, and emotion.

Author Yoshifumi Tozuka

Yoshifumi Tozuka, the creator of Undead Unluck, has been praised for his work on the series. His ability to create unique characters and a compelling storyline has made the manga a hit among readers. Tozuka’s approach to writing characters, not focusing on gender but rather on their motivations to fight for others, has contributed to the series’ success.

A Lasting Impression

As Undead Unluck concludes its manga serialization, its legacy will continue to live on through its anime adaptation, upcoming novel, and the dedicated fanbase it has cultivated. The series has proven to be a unique and engaging addition to the world of shonen manga, leaving a lasting impression on readers who have followed the adventures of Fuuko and Andy.
