Takashi Shiina’s manga adaptation of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, the anime spin-off to Rumiko Takahashi’s iconic Inuyasha series, is slated to conclude with its 10th volume this summer. The announcement came as the ninth volume of the manga was released.

A Journey Concluding

Shiina began serializing the manga in Shogakukan’s Shōnen Sunday S magazine in September 2021. The manga adaptation entered its “final battle” in the eighth volume, which was released in Fall 2024. Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon follows the adventures of Towa Higurashi and Setsuna, the fraternal twin daughters of Sesshomaru and Rin, along with Moroha, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome Higurashi.

What is Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon?

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon is a Japanese anime television series produced and animated by Sunrise. It serves as a sequel spin-off to the Inuyasha anime television series, which is itself based on Rumiko Takahashi’s manga series. The anime series follows Towa Higurashi and Setsuna, Sesshomaru and Rin’s fraternal twin daughters, and Moroha, Inuyasha and Kagome Higurashi’s daughter.

Storyline

In Feudal Japan, Half-Demon twins Towa and Setsuna are separated from each other during a forest fire. While desperately searching for her younger sister, Towa wanders into a mysterious tunnel that sends her into present-day Japan, where she is found and raised by Kagome Higurashi’s brother, Sota, and his family.

Ten years later, the tunnel that connects the two eras has reopened, allowing Towa to be reunited with Setsuna, who is now a Demon Slayer working for Kohaku. However, Setsuna appears to have lost all memories of her older sister. Joined by Moroha, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome, the three young women travel between the two eras on an adventure to regain their missing past.

Anime Series

The anime series’ first season aired from October 2020 to March 2021, with the second season airing from October 2021 to March 2022. Viz Media has licensed the series in North America, while Medialink has licensed it for Southeast Asian and South Asian territories. The anime streamed on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu, and these services also streamed an English dub. The English dub of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon can also be watched on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, while Season 1 is available to stream on Peacock.

About Takashi Shiina

Takashi Shiina is a veteran manga artist known for his work on series such as Ghost Sweeper Mikami, GS Holmes Gokuraku Taisakusen!!, and Zettai Karen Children. Shiina ended his 16-year run of the sci-fi comedy series, Zettai Karen Children, in July 2021. Zettai Karen Children began in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in 2005. The manga inspired a 52-episode television anime series in 2008, as well as a 2010 original video anime adaptation.

Inuyasha: A Legacy

Rumiko Takahashi launched the original Inuyasha manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1996, and it concluded in 2008. Viz licensed and published all 56 volumes of the manga in North America. The 167-episode Inuyasha anime series based on the manga ran from 2000-2004, with a 26-episode sequel anime titled InuYasha: The Final Act running from 2009-2010. The series has also inspired four anime movies and a 30-minute anime short.

Manga Adaptation

Takashi Shiina, with script cooperation by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, began the manga adaptation in Shogakukan’s Shōnen Sunday S on September 25, 2021. Shogakukan released the first collected tankōbon volume on January 18, 2022. Viz Media has licensed the manga for English release in North America, with the first volume released on June 21, 2022. Viz Media is releasing the manga in print and is also releasing new chapters digitally simultaneously as they premiere in Japan in its Viz Manga app.

Final Thoughts

As Takashi Shiina’s manga adaptation of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon approaches its conclusion, fans can anticipate the release of the 10th and final volume this summer. This adaptation has provided a fresh perspective on the story of Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha, adding to the rich legacy of the Inuyasha universe.
