The upcoming anime adaptation of Tatsurō Suga’s manga, The Catcher in the Ballpark! (Ballpark de Tsukamaete!), has announced two new additions to its voice cast. Jin Urayama and Chiharu Sawashiro will be lending their voices to a pair of security guards at the baseball stadium where much of the story unfolds. This announcement adds further depth to the already rich cast of characters in this highly anticipated series, set to premiere in 2025.

New Faces on the Security Team

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for the anime revealed the casting of Jin Urayama as Ryuichi Igarashi, a veteran security guard with 30 years of experience. Igarashi is a well-known figure around the stadium, often referred to as “Iga-san”. Chiharu Sawashiro will voice Takimoto, a new part-time security guard. While both characters share the same profession, they have very different personalities and motivations, setting the stage for interesting interactions and comedic moments.

Opposing Personalities

Igarashi is a seasoned professional, having spent three decades ensuring the safety of stadium patrons, while Takimoto is a newcomer. Takimoto enjoys baseball, but not the actual work of being a security guard or Igarashi himself. This contrast in experience and attitude between the two is expected to provide a compelling dynamic within the series. Their interactions offer a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes workings of the baseball stadium, adding another layer to the show’s overall charm.

Story and Characters

The anime, produced by EMT Squared, is a sports-comedy series that centers around Murata, an office worker voiced by Satoshi Inomata, seeking solace at the local baseball stadium. There, he meets Ruriko, a beer vendor with a gyaru-like appearance, voiced by Fairouz Ai. Though Ruriko initially appears cold towards Murata, it is revealed she has an innocent personality. She becomes his first regular customer.

More Cast Members

The anime boasts a diverse cast of characters, all with their unique quirks and aspirations. Other voice actors include:

  • Ikumi Hasegawa as Aona
  • Satoshi Tanaka as Omatsu
  • Yōji Ueda as Nakaizumi
  • Ayumi Mano as Natsuno Yamada, a girl who dreams of working as a beer vendor but ends up in a bento shop in the stadium.
  • Momoko Seto as Kokoro, a beer vendor who aspires to be a professional actress

These characters add depth to the narrative, highlighting the human element and the various stories that intertwine within the baseball stadium setting.

Production Team

The anime is directed by Jun’ichi Kitamura, known for his work on Fluffy Paradise. Shigeru Murakoshi (The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse) is in charge of series composition. Character designs are handled by Fumio Iida (Record of Ragnarok animation director), and the music is composed by MONACA (NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a). This talented team is expected to bring the manga’s charming story to life with a high level of animation and storytelling quality.

Manga Origins

The Catcher in the Ballpark! manga debuted in Kodansha’s Morning magazine in September 2020. As of November 2024, it has been compiled into 15 tankobon volumes. The series has garnered a dedicated following, praising its lighthearted humor and relatable characters.

Plot Overview

The story follows Murata’s daily visits to the baseball stadium as he seeks relief from his stressful office job. His routine is disrupted when he meets Ruriko. The series will highlight the interactions between Murata and Ruriko, alongside the various characters who frequent the stadium. It will show the drama, laughter, and tears that intertwine among those who work and attend baseball games. It has been described as a romantic comedy dedicated to everyone involved in professional baseball.

A Slice-of-Life at the Ballpark

The anime is expected to be a slice-of-life series that portrays the daily lives of the people who make up the community at the baseball park. From the beer vendors to the security guards to the everyday fans, the show will highlight the unique personalities and the human connections that form in such a setting. The setting of a professional baseball stadium is portrayed as a town of its own, where many people gather to work and laugh together.

Release and Expectations

The Catcher in the Ballpark! anime is slated to premiere sometime in 2025. Fans are eagerly anticipating the adaptation, which is expected to capture the warmth and humor of the original manga. With a talented production team and a cast of skilled voice actors, the anime is poised to be a noteworthy entry in the upcoming anime season. It will be a romantic-comedy full of laughs and tears for all who love baseball.

A Blend of Comedy and Sports

The series will blend the elements of comedy, romance, and sports to create a unique viewing experience. It is expected to showcase the lighter side of professional baseball, while also highlighting the human connections and personal dramas that unfold within the stadium’s walls. The anime will likely appeal to a wide audience, including both sports fans and fans of romantic comedies.

The addition of Jin Urayama and Chiharu Sawashiro to the voice cast adds another layer of excitement for the show. Their characters are sure to play important roles in the series, as they bring their individual flair to the bustling and vibrant world of the baseball stadium. As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to a heartwarming and entertaining series that captures the essence of everyday life at the ballpark.
